Let’s Read Good Books

Life is Short. Read Good Books.

My Thoughts:

I don’t have much to say about this series yet. I love the premise, but the graphic novel left me a little cold. I probably should have jumped in with the novel, but the hold is so long at the library! And besides, the covers for the GN are gorgeous.

The first volume was, I’m not going to lie, a struggle. There is so much backstory crammed into a short page count, and Wei Wuxian’s resurrection was over in a blink, leaving me and Wei Wuxian off balance. I felt that so much was glossed over or quickly mentioned, and I didn’t have a clear idea of who Wei Wuxian is. It left me wishing for a lot more context about all of the characters and how they related to each other.

The second GN settled down and was a more satisfying read. During a flashback to his youth, Wei Wuxain is carefree and frivolous, chafing at the discipline expected of him. He’s a direct contrast to Lan Wangji, a studious and serious student of the Lan Clan of Gusu. He’s already admired and respected by his peers, and Wei Wuxain’s shallow behavior is off-putting to him.

I liked the pretty art, the supernatural battles, and the hint of attraction between the two leads. If the library receives future volumes, I’ll continue with the series.
